Two current Nova Scotia judges received new appointments today, filling some of the vacancies on the province’s superior Courts.
The Honourable Deborah K. Smith has been appointed the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, only the second woman in the province’s history to achieve that position.
The Honourable Joseph P. Kennedy, the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia’s longest serving Chief Justice, retires this week after more than four decades on the Bench. His last day is Tuesday, April 30, 2019.
The Honourable Michael J. Wood is the new Chief Justice of the province’s Court of Appeal and the 23rd Chief Justice of Nova Scotia.
The Honourable Joseph Kennedy, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, extended a warm welcome today to the province’s newest judge, Justice John A. Keith, who will preside on the Supreme Court in Kentville.
The Chief Justice of Nova Scotia is retiring after a 40-year legal career, much of which he spent championing better access to justice, and creating opportunities for his fellow judges to engage and learn from racialized communities.
The province’s Access to Justice Coordinating Committee has fulfilled its mandate and released a final report outlining its work, including launching a new institute that supports access to justice and law reform work in Nova Scotia.
