TWO NEW JUDGES SWORN-IN
TO THE NOVA SCOTIA SUPREME COURT

Peter M.S. Richardson-Bryson and David P.S. Farrar were sworn-in to the Nova Scotia Supreme Court at a ceremony in Halifax on October 2nd, 2009.

The Honourable Justice Peter M.S. Richardson-Bryson was a partner with McInnes Cooper in Halifax. He presides in Halifax, replacing Justice Duncan R. Beveridge who was appointed to the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal in May of this year.

The Honourable Justice David P.S. Farrar was a partner with Stewart McKelvey in Halifax. He presides in Digby Nova Scotia, replacing Justice Patrick Duncan who has transferred to Halifax.

 

Justice Richardson-Bryson received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of King's College in 1977, a Master of Arts (Classics) from Dalhousie University in 1978, a Bachelor of Arts (Jurisprudence) from Oxford University, England, in 1980 and a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1981. He was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1982 and the Bar of New Brunswick in 1993. He joined McInnes Cooper in 1982 and became a partner in 1988.

Justice Richardson-Bryson’s main area of practice was civil litigation and included corporate commercial, securities, estates, trusts and property, special remedies, professional liability and shareholder rights law.

He was a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society, the Law Society of New Brunswick and the Defence Research Institute and lectured part-time at Dalhousie University from 1983 to 1993.

He has been a member of various community organizations including Dalhousie University, Royal College of Dentists of Canada, World Trade Centre (Halifax), Waegwoltic Club, University of King's College and Federation of Nova Scotia Heritage.

Justice Richardson-Bryson was born in Nice, France.

 

Justice Farrar received a Bachelor of Arts from St. Thomas University in 1982 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New Brunswick in 1986. He was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1987, articled with Mockler Allen Dixon and, in 1985, joined Stewart McKelvey in Halifax.

His main area of practice was civil litigation including occupational health and safety, worker's compensation, construction, financial services, government and regulated industries, insurance, intellectual property and labour and employment law.

Justice Farrar was a member of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) and the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society. He was Chair of the CBA Construction Law Section from 1998 to 2008.

He was a frequent speaker at various conferences and was a part-time lecturer at Dalhousie Law School from 1989 to 2007. He was active in various community organizations, including St. Thomas University Alumni Association, Board of Governors and various sub-committees.

 

Justice Farrar was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick.
