A swearing-in ceremony for the Honourable Cindy A. Bourgeois of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court was held at the Sydney Courthouse on Tuesday September 1st, 2009.

Justice Bourgeois was appointed to the Supreme Court on June 19, 2009. Her appointment to the Bench took effect immediately. She was officially sworn in by The Honourable Michael MacDonald, Chief Justice of Nova Scotia at a small ceremony on June 24th. She has been working as a Judge in Sydney since then.

Justice Bourgeois earned a Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie University in 1988, and a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie Law School in 1992. She was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1992.

She was an associate with the law firm of Hicks LeMoine in Amherst since 1992 and became a managing partner there in 2006.

Her main areas of practice have been Civil Litigation including commercial, personal injury, disability and employment disputes.
She has also acted as a Small Claims Court Adjudicator since 2006.

Justice Bourgeois replaces Justice Simon J. MacDonald who has elected to become a supernumerary Judge.
