June 24, 2004 - Chief Justice Constance Glube has announced that she will retire as Chief Justice of Nova Scotia and a judge of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, effective December 31, 2004. Chief Justice Glube was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (formerly Trial Division) and ex-officio member of the Court of Appeal in 1977.

On March 8, 1982, she was appointed Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (the first female Chief Justice in Canada) and on June 30, 1998, Chief Justice Glube was appointed Chief Justice of Nova Scotia (Nova Scotia Court of Appeal), the twenty-first Chief Justice of Nova Scotia. In November of that year she was appointed Administrator of the Government of the Province of Nova Scotia.

Chief Justice Glube is a graduate of both McGill University and Dalhousie University and holds honourary doctorates in law from Dalhousie, Mount Saint Vincent and St. Mary’s Universities.

From 1964 until 1974, she practiced law with the firms Kitz, Matheson, then Fitzgerald & Glube and later acted as a solicitor for the Legal Department of the City of Halifax. In 1974 she was appointed City Manager for the City of Halifax, the first woman to be appointed as city manager in Canada.

Among numerous professional and volunteer commitments during this time, she has chaired a number of Canadian Judicial Council committees, served as a member of the board of the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice, as Honorary Chair with the Canadian Mental Health Association, as a board member of the National Judicial Institute and a board member of the International Commission of Jurists, Canadian Section.

Chief Justice Glube is currently Chair of the Nova Scotia Judicial Council, Chair of the Board of Nova Scotia Archives, Chair of the Executive Office of the Nova Scotia Judiciary, Administrator of the Government of the Province of Nova Scotia and was recently made an Honorary Member of the Canadian Bar Association.

Chief Justice Glube has been especially active in issues related to court-administrative efficiency, access to justice, and judicial independence. Another important focus of her work has been in the area of judicial education. Chief Justice Glube played a central role in the growth and development of the National Judicial Institute and has served as Chair of the Judicial Education committee of the Canadian Judicial Council for six years and one term as Vice Chair.
