Justice Peter M.S. Bryson To Be Sworn In

The Honourable Justice Peter M.S. Bryson has been appointed to the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. He replaces Justice Nancy Bateman who retired on August 4th, 2010.

Justice Bryson comes to the Court of Appeal from the Nova Scotia Supreme Court. He was appointed to that Court in September of 2009.

Prior to his first appointment to the Bench, Justice Bryson was a partner with the law firm of McInnes Cooper in Halifax. He joined the firm in 1982 and became a partner in 1988. His main area of practice was civil litigation and included corporate commercial, securities, estates, trusts and property, special remedies, professional liability and shareholder rights law.

He received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of King's College in 1977, a Master of Arts (Classics) from Dalhousie University in 1978, a Bachelor of Arts (Jurisprudence) from Oxford University, England, in 1980 and a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1981. He was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1982 and the Bar of New Brunswick in 1993.

Justice Bryson has been a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society, the Law Society of New Brunswick and the Defence Research Institute and lectured part-time at Dalhousie University from 1983 to 1993.

He has also been a member of various community organizations including Dalhousie University, Royal College of Dentists of Canada, World Trade Centre (Halifax), Waegwoltic Club, University of King's College and Federation of Nova Scotia Heritage.
