The Family Court provides a forum for hearing issues relating to the family including maintenance, custody/access, child protection matters and family violence between spouses or between parent and child. In Nova Scotia, the Family Court sits only in the areas outside the Reginal Municipality of Halifax and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Inside these two regional municipalities, Family Matters are dealt with by the Family Division of the Supreme Court. Proceedings in the Family Court are governed by the Family Court Act and the Family Court Rules. The Nova Scotia Department of Justice provides administrative and operational support to the Family Court. For more about the Court, click on the "Family Court" link at the top of this page.
