Justice Darryl W. Wilson

Born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton, N.S., in 1948, Justice Darryl W. Wilson attended Acadia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He went on to obtain his Chartered Accountant’s designation in 1971 and later attended Dalhousie University, graduating with his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1975. He was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar the following year.

At the beginning of his legal career, Justice Wilson had a general law practice in Cape Breton with Frank Edwards, who is also now a Justice of the Supreme Court in Sydney. Later, his practice grew to include public accounting with the firm Lee Martin and law with the firm Boudrea, Beaton & LaFosse.

Justice Wilson also served as the assistant Crown Prosecutor for Cape Breton County. He was one of the initial three members appointed to the Nova Scotia Municipal Board, established in 1982, where he remained until his appointment to the Family Court of Nova Scotia in 1985.

Prior to his appointment, Justice Wilson was a member of the Rotary and Chair of the annual financial campaign of the United Way of Cape Breton. He also prepared the law course examinations for students in the Chartered Accountant’s program.

Justice Wilson became a Judge of the Provincial Court in 1989. While on the Family and Provincial Courts, he also served as President of the Nova Scotia Provincial Judges’ Association. He became a Justice of the Supreme Court (Family Division) when that Court was established on March 30, 1999. He elected supernumerary (part-time) status in March 2014.

During his time with the Supreme Court, Justice Wilson served on the Rota Committee and the Family Division Bench/Bar Liaison Committee. On several occasions, he presented at the annual National Judicial Institute’s Family Law Seminar.

Justice Wilson has always enjoyed participating in recreational sports, including hockey and golf. For him, retirement will be a time for family and leisure. Justice Wilson, on behalf of the everyone at the Nova Scotia Courts, we wish you many happy years of both in the future!
